Wonder women

[Thanks to Joe]
Wonder Woman seems to be getting up there with Bats and the rest. Surely a film must be in the works. Angelina is getting too up there, but how about whatshername from Transformers? I think she's a better actor than she's generally given credit for, I think she could pull it off.

(Isn't the top one gorgeous?)

It strikes me: how come Wonderwoman is wearing American colors? She is not American, and she does not fight for American values. She was born in a hidden island state, and she's a feminist demi-goddess whose goal is to bring peace and an end to male domination. I think. Not exactly "justice and the American way".

Wonder Woman's creator, Dr William Moulton Marston, dreamed her up as a positive role model for young women. Dr Marston ALSO invented the polygraph. Looking at early WW issues wherein our heroine is bound and gagged in increasingly diabolical ways really makes me wonder about Dr Marston's overall frame of mind!

Almost every medium of American entertainment between 1940 and 1990 was used at some point to be a counterpoint to either Fascism or Communism. Screenwriters were suppressed, actors were blacklisted and books were banned to "protect" citizens from "the Red Menace" while films and comic books were used for both obvious and subliminal propaganda. America is often touted as the land of the free, but when it comes to the entertainment industry, we've always been a land of paranoia.

And to change the subject completely, I thought Joss Whedon was working on a Wonder Woman series.

Oh just looked it up, film, and he's no longer on it. Hey ho.

When she came into contact with human civilization, she adopted the American flag colors because she found the ideals of America very similar to her own.

Since this happened in the 40's, I can understand there weren't many alternatives around :-)

I seem to remember Wonder Woman falling in love with some American pilot who crashed on her island. Maybe that's why.

The top pic. This is the image of a confidant woman who taken care of herself.

The middle pic. She and her friend are the only ones in the picture that are happy and enjoying the day.

Bottom picture. Is a generous woman who is braving the cold. Displaying her feminine curves while a *real* dirty old man. Enjoys the view.

Steven,
as a non-American but one whose country needed Americans to get rid of Fascism I tell you -- America is not perfect, but try to live with fascism (like my family did) and then you'll see how propaganda in comic books is an acceptable, lesser evil.

Folks who like these might like Craig Yoe's Wacky Wonder Woman archives.

Before you click the link, I think I should warn you that there are some images in the archives that you probably don't want to see.

That chick in the middle photo is the reason a person should always sunbathe nude.

You may have a point, Dave, but it doesn't apply to every person. You'll just have to trust me on that.

Treplovski,
It's no secret that early WW issues were aimed less at assertive women than at men with bondage kinkiness fantasies!

WW just recently got a style revamp, when "the gods decided to modify the timeline" (yes, ANOTHER "reset button"!). She now wears pants and a jacket. Writers say: "We kept being asked , just HOW does she fight wearing THIS? So, we gave her something more adapted."
Yeah, well, forget about her little piggies obediently staying "inside the farm" in the worst tornadoes, I just wanna know how the f*** she could do anything IN HIGH HEELS, except trip flat on her face or tushie! I've been wondering since the very first time I saw her, and I was a child. A child, but not a complete idiot.
Then again, when you see the towering pistol footwear of Bayonetta (and she's clothed with her very HAIR), WW starts seeming plausible by comparison! :-D

"Almost every medium of American entertainment between 1940 and 1990 was used at some point to be a counterpoint to either Fascism or Communism."
Yeah, almost all... except of course for Captain America©!

"she adopted the American flag colors because she found the ideals of America very similar to her own."
Yeah, well, everybody knows the Amazon empire was always big on conquest. ;-p

"The middle pic. She and her friend are the only ones in the picture that are happy and enjoying the day."
Enjoying it after saving it in a bitter fight, judging by the state off her costume, LOL!
She does have a lovely happy smile. Must be quite proud of her narrow victory. ;-)

"as a non-American but one whose country needed Americans to get rid of Fascism"...

Yeah, sure, but what about those many fascist-like dictatorships that the USA always supported because they were "friendly regimes"?
Part of America's noble propaganda is brazen lies. :-(
After the fall of the Soviet Union, it was confirmed that most of the shameful things America had accused the commies of was true... but also that most of the Soviet propaganda's accusations against the Capitalist West was equally true! Anti-commie witch hunts in the Fifties were "simply" less lethal than Stalin's gulag. But equally oppressive, in their spirit.

It's GOOD that the USA helped others when things were bad. But they only did so out of personal interest, let's be honest about that. Remember the embarrassing period of "freedom fries", after their French friends warned them about a very bad mistake they were preparing to make?
That was anything BUT the attitude of a friendly country, all the name-calling and low blows to a country that was already -and still is- dedicatedly involved as an ally in Afghanistan.

[Shoot. Another comment I'll have to split in two.]

EVERY country can potentially become a liberticidal horror. Look at the anti-photographer paranoia in the UK and tell me it's not a VERY worrying tendancy right there.
Since "our American friends" have helped oust Syria's dreaded military presence from Lebanon, the regime has become MORE corrupt than ever. Sad fact. And one you won't ever hear from the mouth of an American official, not under GWB, not under Obama.
All pure geopolitical interests. Our destinies are nothing more to them than pawns and chips in their planetary game. Sometimes they help ypu, sometimes they push your head underwater.
France was never invited to the Yalta conference. Coincidence? I think not. France's much-mocked Resistance (mocked in the days of "freedom fries") hindered the nazis so long and so well, that it significantly helped their allies tip the scales and supported Britain's own heroic stand. "How quickly they forget!"

I reject the very notion of "lesser evil", and acknowledge only "shades of grey". Politics is, was and will remain intrinsically selfish and opportunistic. No matter how noble the singling, high-flying, patriotic labels.
The Soviet regime turned into an abomination, and so did Mao's China. Yet, both initially relied on the enthusiasm of a whole nation for beautiful PRINCIPLES in order to make their otherwise impossible revolutions.
Doubt everyone in power. They all have great interest in lying to you.

"Before you click the link, I think I should warn you that there are some images in the archives that you probably don't want to see."
Woops! Too late, Michael!
Too late for regrets.
So I'll have none. :-)
"I regret that I have but only one click to give to Wonder Woman!!!" :-)

Yes, you have some good points there.

They have covered up Wonder Woman??
Shit, don't they realize what made her popular? That's ridiculous. Just claim that her skin is magically nigh-invulnerable, so she can dress however she wants.

To get a true change in power. The change has to come from the grass roots. The will of the people, if it strong. Cannot be ignored.

Look back at the French Revolution. It took loping off a few heads to get their point across.

Well, it's not like they gave her an ugly blulky armor, more like classy (and sexy) streetwear.
The thing is, she's rather evenly matched with Superman, so her skin probably IS nigh-invulnerable to most things... except oogling when a "Janetrobe malfunction accident" occurs! (^_^)
I wonder whether this change was to sexualize her less, or to prudify her a little. Otherwise put, I wonder if it's out of feminism, or moralism! :-p
Best plausibility improvement detail IMO: her top now has STRAPS. Also, she doesn't "sit on the flag" anymore. ;-)

Yeah. You mean a people with SPINE, not a centuries-old tradition in servile boot-licking! :-(
Feudalism (in a political guise) has roots deeper than the grass in THIS country. You'd think they SMOKE them grass roots, or something. ):-P

BTW, the head-lopping during the French Revolution ended with the head of Robespierre, the top head-lopper himself. I find this... interesting.

Aah, shucks! Let's talk about hot, sexy, busty, strong women instead! I'm in a mood for some smiles today. DROOLING smiles! }8-p~~~

P.S.: last illustration of that article, bottom panel, you see a "W" shaped mark on the guy's forehead. It comes from Calde Chica's new bracelets. You could say that each of her punches is now a "signature move". :-)
("Calde Chica"? !Perdón, muchachos! I meant "Mujer Maravilla", of course. Caramba, I don't know what could've distracted me so. 0:-)

"50% of women today are still sexually frustrated. Hey, I can't be everywhere!"

"see a "W" shaped mark on the guy's forehead"

Reminds me of the "Z" left by Zorro when fighting the bad guys.

Noticed blood flying during the fight illustrations. Seems to be a big change from the old Wonder Woman.
